The pollination ecology of Symplocarpus foetidus (L.) W. Salisbury was studied in a seasonally forested flooded bog Québec (Canada) 2008 and 2009. protogynous anthesis duration ranged from 15 to 20 days with, chronologically, female phase about 5 days, bisexual 2 male 9 days. spadix temperature differences with ambient air were higher during the (mean: 13.6°C) than phases 4.5°C). inside floral chamber warmed by heating spadix, particularly (~6°C warmer air). High temperatures maintained through nighttime phase, whereas they occurred only daytime phases. average natural fruit seed sets relatively low (18.2% 14%), set varied between years (13% vs. 31% 2009). Since spontaneous self-pollination is rare reproductive event, sexual reproduction relies mainly on insect cross-pollination. Pollination probably generalist considering large variety Coleoptera Diptera families attracted plant, such as Chironomidae, Sphaeroceridae, Mycetophilidae, Phoridae, Drosophilidae, Chloropidae, Anthomyiidae. many different types visit inflorescences, it unclear whether this system deceptive interaction (its unpleasant scent typical other Araceae), breeding site mutualism (developing larvae have been observed inflorescences), or combination two.
